Anyone who doubts that we’ve had a major political realignment should look at what’s happened to Congress. After the 2004 election, there were many declarations that we’d entered a long-term, perhaps permanent era of Republican dominance. Since then, Democrats have won back-to-back victories, picking up at least 12 Senate seats and more than 50 House seats. They now have bigger majorities in both houses than the G.O.P. ever achieved in its 12-year reign.
I’m guessing this will meet the eyes of many who are like minded, but I’m sure there are a few that are not as happy about the outcome of the presidential election. I have spent a good portion of my politically aware life unsatisfied with the lack of progress made in our country on so many issues. I hope the inspiration of electing Barack is met with action from our government that represents the interest of We the People. A constitutional lawyer as Executive in chief is certainly a good start to rebuild the damage done to the constitution, the commons of the American people, the moral ground on which we once stood, and so many other aspects of American life that has been shit on during the last thirty years. I have not felt, in my adult life, this kind of hope that America might behave as prescribed by the ideals set forth by the founding generation of America. I don’t feel the most significant aspect of the Obama election is that he’s a black man, although that is incredibly significant, it’s that democracy and the better man for the job came out on top. A result much different than the last two elections. We all gained some respect back from the rest of the world this week, and for that I’m moved like I haven’t been since I was made aware of other amazing moments in Human history that led to the forward progression of human civilization. In one week, by one common act, I feel like our world has been transformed for the better. We picked the smart one, the country has moved to the left of center, and the old entrenched racist, fearful America is fading in power. I’m hopeful for America’s future like I haven’t been in my life, the conservative ideology is all but put in a grave, and democracy has moved us into a new future.
